This website was orginially constructed back in the early autumn of 1998 to show others what the railroads in northern West Virginia was like. Since then, this site has gone through many changes and many more are still to come! More importantly, this is not a private website, but one that often relies on the knowledge and photographs of other railfans who have visited this region. The reason for this is no one person can be everyplace at every single moment to capture every single train. Because of this, many subdivisions or scenes cannot be shown without the generous help of the other railfans of the northern West Virginia region. Due to these contributions, Northern West Virginia's Railroads is extending it's coverage beyond the range originally envisioned with the addition of several former CSX subdivisions in addition to an upcoming vintage Western Maryland Railway section. If you find a photo you like and would like to contact the photographer, check the list below for an email address and if it's not given, email me and I'll provide you with the contact info. Enjoy your visit!

The Railfans of WVRAIL

Matt Reese is the webmaster of Northern West Virginia's Railroads and has been a lifelong railfan of this region. Matt's main interests are the current lines whose previous owners were the Western Maryland, the B&O and the Monongahela Railway, inaddition to the remaining shortlines in the region.
Chris Strogen is also a lifelong railfan of this region. Chris' main interests are the various lines found throughout the entire state and region and his contributions cover a wide area, including the Short Line Subdivision page where his photos and information make up the backbone of that page.
Ron Stafford has a special interest in the branchline and shortline railroads located in the Appalachian (KY-PA-VA-WV) coal fields. His wealth of knowledge on these lines have enabled this site to examine the often obsecure aspects of these fascinating sections of railroading. In addition to railroads, Ron also has an interest in industrial "archeology".
Kevin Scanlon has been photographing trains since 1973 and is more interested in a railroad's place within the land and culture than in its equipment or paint scheme. His excellent work can be found on many of the pages within the site, including a look at the Thomas Subdivision during the Western Maryland Era. Although Kevin has no particular favorite line, he enjoys Appalachian railroading in general and West Virginia in particular.
Rich Borkowski Jr. is well known for his knowledge about the region's railroads and his steady stream of railfan articles which have graced the pages of several major print publishers. Rich is currently working on a book about the CSX lines in the region, inaddition to railfanning the many railroads of the Tri State area. Information about his most recent addition to many railfans' bookshelves can be found on the Railroad Books page.
Jerry Doyle is a lifelong railfan of the railroad in West Virginia. His railfan interests vary across a wide range of lines ranging from the B&O, WM, C&O to Norfolk Southern's Pocahontas Divison, inaddition to railroad preservation work through painting and stenciling various railroad equipment in the region. His most recent work, the widely acclaimed Chessie System Diesel Book, is at the forefront of the contemporary and historical railfanning era.
